How to use the Scientific Notation Calculator

  1. Pick a mode: convert to scientific, convert from scientific, or calculate.
  2. Enter the number(s) or mantissa & exponent.
  3. Engineering notation (powers of 10³) is shown alongside.
  4. Calculate mode accepts inputs like 3.5e8 directly.

Scientific & engineering notation

Scientific notation writes any number as a × 10^n with 1 ≤ |a| < 10. It's how scientists handle quantities from atomic radii to galactic distances on the same scratchpad.

Engineering notation forces the exponent to be a multiple of 3 (kilo, mega, giga, micro, nano, …). Same number, friendlier for SI prefixes.
