Roman numerals — rules and quirks

Roman numerals are additive (II = 2) except when a smaller value precedes a larger (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40).

There's no zero and no native fractions. Numbers above 3999 traditionally use overlines for ‘×1000’.

Still used for clocks, movie sequels, monarchs and the Super Bowl.
