From min/km to mph: converting pace without a spreadsheet
Pace conversion is a small daily annoyance for runners and cyclists who train across systems. Watches default to min/km in most of the world, mile splits are still standard in the US and UK, treadmills use mph, cycling shows kph or mph depending on brand, and sprint coaches think in m/s. Converting between them mentally is error-prone; the calculator makes it instant.
The core formulas: min/km × 1.60934 = min/mile. mph × 1.60934 = kph. min/mile = 60 ÷ mph. m/s × 3.6 = kph. Round-tripping between min/mile and min/km involves converting to a decimal (5:30/km = 5.5/km), multiplying, and converting back (5.5 × 1.60934 = 8.85/mile = 8:51/mile). Do it manually and you'll get the seconds wrong half the time. The calculator handles the MM:SS format cleanly.
For treadmill training, memorize the mph ↔ min/mile shortcuts: 6 mph = 10:00/mile, 7 mph = 8:34, 7.5 mph = 8:00, 8 mph = 7:30, 9 mph = 6:40, 10 mph = 6:00. Set your treadmill to hit target training paces without constantly opening the calculator. Every 0.5 mph change is roughly a 30-second-per-mile swing at typical training speeds.
For outdoor pacing with a GPS watch, most modern watches let you switch units in settings. Match your race unit — if racing in Europe, train and race in min/km; racing US road races, use min/mile. Switching mid-race adds cognitive load you don't need. Some watches let you display multiple fields simultaneously — current pace in min/km, average pace in min/mile, mph on the third screen.
For cycling, kph is European standard (Tour de France displays), mph is US standard. Convert once at the start of a long ride to set target zones and forget about it. Sprint coaches think in m/s because peak sprint speed (10+ m/s for elite men, 9+ m/s for elite women over 100 m) reveals power output more clearly than pace formats designed for endurance.
