Multipoint pacing: the discipline that separates finishers from blow-ups
Anyone can run at target pace for a mile. The skill is holding pace across every mile of a marathon, or across 30+ aid stations of a 100-miler. Multipoint pace analysis — tracking segment paces against target across a race — is how elite runners avoid the wall and how coaches diagnose blown races post-event.
The first tool is the negative split. Running the second half of a race faster than the first is the pattern behind almost every PR at every distance. Elite marathon world records are set with 30–60 second negative splits (the second half is 30–60 seconds faster than the first half). Positive splits — running the first half faster — feel great for 60 minutes and terrible for the next 3 hours. Every seasoned coach preaches: 'start slower than you think you can.'
For ultra-distance events, multipoint tracking has a second dimension: aid station time. 'Moving pace' — pace while actually running — differs from 'total pace' including aid stops by 15–30 minutes over a 100-miler. Elite ultrarunners are ruthless at aid stations: in and out under 60 seconds, hand grab whatever's needed, keep moving. Recreational ultrarunners typically lose 30+ minutes across a race in aid stops — often the difference between a hard finish and a DNF.
Elevation-adjusted pace is the third dimension. On the road, every 1% grade uphill slows pace by roughly 15 sec/mile; every 1% downhill speeds pace by ~7 sec/mile (up to a limit — steep downhills wreck quads and slow you). On trails, adjust by 30–60 sec/mile per 100 m of gain, more if the trail is technical. The multipoint calculator flags segments outside expected range so you can catch fade early.
The tactical use is real-time and post-race. During the race: check projected finish at each aid station; if projected drift exceeds ±2 minutes off target for the third checkpoint in a row, either back off (if too fast) or accept the new plan (if too slow). Post-race: analyze which segments cost time and why — pacing, fueling, terrain, or heat. Compare across multiple races on the same course to spot patterns. Multipoint data is what turns racing from mystery into engineering.
