FLSA overtime rules — the basics US workers should know

Non-exempt employees must get 1.5× regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. Salaried under $684/week is also non-exempt.

California layers on daily overtime (over 8 hours) and double-time (over 12 hours or on the 7th consecutive day). Every state has quirks.

Bonuses and commissions can bump your 'regular rate' upward for OT calculation. If you get quarterly bonuses, your OT is worth more than base × 1.5.
